CITY DESCRIPTION: SAN
MIGUEL DE TUCUMAN sometimes called Tucuman City is the capital of the province
of Tucuman and is about 820 miles northwest of Buenos Aires. Boasting almost
500,000 inhabitants it is one of Argentina's older cities starting around
1600. But due to Indian problems, disease and lack of water it was moved
to its present location about 90 years later. As provincial capital it
is a commercial and government center with good communications, banking
and transportation. While principally commercial in nature, there is still
a lot to see and do for the tourist. Some ancient buildings are still standing,
such as the House of Independence and many old houses and churches. It
has a wide selection of hotels, restaurants, pubs and bars, car rentals
and other tourist services.
