    CITY DESCRIPTION: SAN MARTIN DE LOS ANDES is an Alpine Resort just a little north of its more famous cousin Bariloche and about 750 miles southwest of Buenos Aires on the eastern slope of the Andes. With only 18,000 full time inhabitants its number swells considerably in season and there are two. Its setting, among lakes and mountains, makes it a year round tourist destination. In winter the nearby (about 12 miles) Chapelco Ski area can accommodate 11,000 skiers and features 30 runs from a 8,500 foot mountain that provide fun and excitement no matter what your skill level. It is considered to be among South America's most modern ski areas. In summer the surrounding lakes (it is right on Lake Lacar) and rivers provide everything from fishing to canoeing to rafting. It has a large selection of hotels, restaurants, shops and a casino. Here you can rent your equipment from skis to snow mobiles. It is a good vacation choice year round.
