CITY DESCRIPTION:LA PLATA, not to be confused with Mar del Plata, is a pretty big city of 550,000 inhabitants only 36 miles southeast of Buenos Aires on the Rio Plata. It is the capital of the Province of Buenos Aires. Bet you thought Buenos Aires was! Confused? The city of Buenos Aires is a Federal District like Mexico D.F. and Washington D.C. Actually La Plata was created because they needed a state province capital separate from the country's. It is tied to Buenos Aires with frequent train service and it has some important museums, the National University of La Plata, and has a strong business infrastructure. It is primarily a commercial city.
