CITY DESCRIPTION:EL CHALTEN
is a lot like El Calafate, which is only a few miles to the south, It is
1,300 miles south of Buenos Aires. El Chalten is a small village in the
heart of the Argentine Patagonia, with beautiful scenery, and an atmosphere
of adventure. Within site of Fitz Roy with a backdrop of snow capped peaks,
it is a new town, started in 1985. It is developing rapidly but care is
being taken to protect the charm and character of this spectacular, remote
setting. Accommodations are varied. Several small B&B style lodgings
are available in town, several small restaurants and a few gift shops round
out the tourism oriented infrastructure.
